San Francisco Installs High-Tech Recycling Bins

The Department of the Environment in San Francisco recently decided to install numerous textile recycling bins throughout the city.

Clothes recycling in San Francisco will get a little easier with help from technology. A collaborative effort between Goodwill Industries and funded by the Department of the Environment is set to install innovative textile recycling bins throughout the city’s many apartment buildings as well as participating clothing retailers.

The GoBin containers are all equipped with wireless technology. When they are full and ready to be picked up, a notification is sent to Goodwill.

Prior to arriving at the final destination, another firm steps in and sorts the clothing pieces to determine if they are in proper shape to be sold at Goodwill stores or if they can be donated for use in other products like paper or soda cans.

Some of the clothes will be broken down and transformed into insulation. Those who recycle also get an added bonus.

A QR code located on the side of the bin allows Good Samaritans to immediately access a tax donation document. The bins, which were developed by global design company frog, showcase a unique design.

Instead of the typical box like shape, the new units have a curved design and lid that almost mimics a smiling mouth. Reportedly around 39 million pounds of garments are dropped off in San Francisco landfills annually.

The bins will help the city achieve its goal of having zero textile waste by the year 2020.
