Japanese Beethoven: deaf composer Mamoru Samuragochi (佐村河内 守) exposed as fraud

Mamoru Samuragochi, a 50-year-old deaf composer dubbed a "modern-day Beethoven," had someone else write his music for more than 10 years, his lawyer disclosed on Feb. 5.

According to a statement faxed to the media, although Samuragochi had claimed that all of his pieces, including his representative work "Symphony No. 1 Hiroshima," were self written, what he actually did was give his ideas and vision for the works to another person, who subsequently composed the pieces on his behalf.

Samuragochi wrote in an email, "I have been causing great trouble. I apologise deeply to my fans and reflect on what I did. I am very sorry to let everyone concerned down."

Japanese TV stations have apologised for introducing Samuragochi. While Japanese record firm Nippon Columbia has decided to terminate his CD shipments and Internet deliveries.

The pieces in question also include "Sonatina for Violin," a composition that Japanese figure skater Daisuke Takahashi plans to use for his short programme performance at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

On February 4, the release of the score -- originally slated for Feb. 11 -- was abruptly cancelled. However, Kansai University with which Daisuke Takahashi is affiliated, announced on February 5 on its website that the music score will remain unchanged.
