China: suspended death sentence for doctor who stole and sold babies

A Chinese doctor has been handed a suspended death sentence for stealing babies from the hospital where she worked.

The obstetrician then sold them on to child traffickers.

The court found Zhang Shuxia guilty of abducting and selling seven babies in Shaanxi province.

The doctor told parents their children had serious diseases and persuaded them to give up the new-born infants.

Six of the babies were returned to their families, while one, a baby girl died.

Police in China are investigating a further 26 cases related to Zhang. It is claimed she received 2,600 euros for a baby boy who was then sold on for higher price.

A suspended death sentence in China is usually commuted to life imprisonment.
