Sharon's procession includes stop at famed Israeli military site

After official state honors in Jerusalem, a funeral procession for former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon made its way to his family farm near Sderot on Monday (January 13).
The coffin was transported by military escort from Israel's parliament building, the Knesset in Jerusalem.
Along the route, the convoy stopped at Latrun, the site of a 1948 battle during Israel's War of Independence.
The site straddles the 1949 armistice line that divides between Israel and the West Bank.
As a young platoon commander in the fledgling Israeli army's Alexandroni Brigade, Sharon fought in the battle of Latrun in the 1948 War, where he was seriously wounded. Today, the site serves as a heritage site for Israel's Armoured Corps.
As the military vehicle carrying Sharon's body approached the memorial site, Israel's highest ranking military officers stood in an official guard.
