A senior policeman dubbed "Pakistan's toughest cop" is killed along with three associates in a bomb blast in Karachi.

Chief of the Crime Investigation Department, Chaudhry Aslam, was known for his tough stance on criminals and Islamist militants. He had survived previous attacks on his life.

Police say his armored vehicle was targeted as he drove in a convoy along a quiet road:

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) SENIOR POLICE OFFICIAL, RAJA UMAR KHITTAB, SAYING:

"From what we can see, it looks like the attack came from the left side. It was most probably a suicide attack, and the vehicle was hit very close on the driver's side."

The blast was so large, residents say they heard it across Karachi.

The Taliban described Aslam's death as a "huge victory."
