Calcutta teenage gang rape victim dies from burns injuries

A 16-year-old girl from India has died after twice being the victim of a brutal gang rape and attack, police say.

The teenager was raped two times in October and later allegedly burnt by the families of her attackers in December.

The incident has sparked huge public outcry, with members of India’s Communist Party protesting outside the West Bengal Provincial Government.

Brinda Karat, Chief of All India Women’s Democratic Association pointed the finger at local government for failing to act: “This girl would have been among us today if the West Bengal administration had exercised the law properly. Where is the law? A girl was gang-raped twice and still they’re unable to punish the accused. Why?”

The girl’s death echoes that of a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist who died from her injuries after being gang-raped on a bus in New Delhi a year ago. That incident cast a negative international spotlight on India’s attitude towards violence against women.
