Russian authorities say death toll in railway bombing at least 14

As Russia prepares to host the winter Olympics another deadly attack after a female suicide bomber blew herself up at a train station Sunday with more than a dozen people feared dead.

The head of Russia's Investigative Committee says a child is among the wounded.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) HEAD OF RUSSIA'S INVESTIGATIVE COMMITTEE, VLADIMIR MARKIN, SAYING:

"As a result of the blast 14 people died, including one policeman. 27 injured were injured and they have been hospitalized, including one child. According to our information the explosion was carried out by a female suicide bomber who approached metal detector, saw policeman there, got nervous and detonated the bomb."

The Volgograd station was busier than usual, with people traveling home for the New Year holidays. But it could have been worse.
