More than 50 inmates escape from Ecuador prison

Some 55 inmates escaped from a Quito prison facility on Sunday (December 16), sparking a shootout and a chase by police who captured at least 20 of the prisoners on the street.

Using helicopters and rooftops as a perch, Ecuadorean authorities managed to roundup at least 20 of the would-be escapees.

According to officials, the escape was aided by a number of the guards. He also said that nine guards had failed to show up for their shifts that day.

The prison facility is built to house 300 inmates, however, according to reports, there were over 1,200.
