French troops in Central African Republic clashed with gunmen in the capital, as they searched for weapons.

France has moved 1600 troops into its former colony, to disarm rival Muslim and Christian fighters responsible for hundreds of killings since last week.

Morning shootings erupted near the airport, after gunmen refused to hand over their weapons.

Later in the day, French forces came under attack by former rebels in the city center. And pockets of mob violence erupted in several parts of the city.
