South Africans mourn the passing of Nelson Mandela

Residents of Soweto, the former home of Nelson Mandela, honored the anti-apartheid hero with bursts of dance and song.

(SOUNDBITE) BOIKANYO TLADI, SOWETO RESIDENT, SAYING:

"This is a moment for South Africans to celebrate the life of a legend you know."

Others released white doves near the house of the late president and hundreds more paid respects with flowers, candles and prayer.

"I think he was a great icon. He will be remembered in generations to come."

Archbishop Desmond Tutu told those at a prayer service he gives thanks for Mandela's time on earth.

And South Africa's last white president, F.W. de Klerk, who released Nelson Mandela from jail, praised his legacy.
