Children Becoming Slower Runners Than Their Parents

With all of the news about how children are now more sedentary than ever, it probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise that they’re getting slower as well.

With headlines about how children are more sedentary than ever before, it probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise that they’re slower as well.

According to a recent study, it takes today’s kids 90 more seconds to run a mile than it did the youth of 30 years ago.

Fitness levels as they relate to the heart have also been found to be in a steady rate of decline, falling 5 percent a decade.

The problem mostly exists in Western countries, but select Asian nations have similar issues.

Among them are parts of China including Hong Kong and South Korea.

The data used by the researchers involved 25 million children, 28 countries, and was collected over 46 years.

Problems of diminished endurance were found to most correlate with increases in body mass.

The up side of the study is that the plummeting fitness statistics seem to be leveling off in many places including Australia, Europe and New Zealand.

North America has begun to show signs of stabilization over the past several years.

To improve and maintain fitness levels, experts advise that children engage in vigorous activity for at least an hour a day.
