Flash flooding on the Italian holiday island of Sardinia has left at least 14 people dead and ten missing.

Heavy rain caused swollen rivers to break their banks sweeping away cars and inundating homes.

The worst affected was In and around the city of Olbia in the northeast of the island as winds of up to 125 kph caused structural damage..

Three of the victims were from the same family . They died when a road bridge collapsed crushing their car, while a mother and daughter were found dead in their vehicle after it was swept away.

In Olbia, hundreds of residents took to Facebook to offer shelter for the night to those forced out of their homes by the severe weather.

There was also heavy rain across northern Italy as with high winds and flooding in several coastal areas.
