Sadly, the herd of elephants, which included 2 baby cubs, had been on the tracks at that precise moment after wandering out of a nearby forest. The fatal incident occurred in West Bengal, India.
The train had actually plowed into about 40 elephants, which had all sauntered on the tracks as a group. On top of the 7 deaths, 10 of the elephants are left critically injured and some of them may not survive.
The forestry minister in West Bengal spoke of the crash stating “The herd scattered, but returned to the railway tracks and stood there for quite some time before they were driven away by forest guards and railroad workers who rushed to the spot after the accident.”
Many elephants have been killed by trains in recent times as numerous railways run through national parks in the area. The forestry department has suggested slowing down train speeds in certain areas.
