MANGALORE: Even as the state government succumbed to pressure from various organizations and handed over the probe into the rape and death of Nirmala (name changed).

To CBI, the parents have expressed their lack of faith in a probe by a state-run agency. They have demanded that the CBI probe be under the supervision of the apex court. According to home minister KJ George, the state will send request to CBI on Wednesday to probe the case.

"Since the people who are involved in the rape and murder of our daughter are influential and have a long reach which has been proved by the CID inquiry, we fear that we will not get justice. We trust that the apex court cannot be influenced, hence we want the probe to be supervised by it," said Chandappa Gowda and Kusumavathi, parents of the deceased girl.

Nirmala, a II PUC student of SDM PU College, was found raped and murdered near Ujire on October 9, 2012. A few days afterwards, the police arrested Santosh Rao, who was said to be mentally unstable, and claimed that the case had been solved.

"There are several doubts we have regarding the case, which the police and the CID inquiry has not addressed. Unless they are cleared, how can we trust the report," Chandappa questioned.

D Veerendra Heggade, dharmadhikari, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala said: "The move to hand over the case to India's premier investigating agency, will aid the truth in coming out and I wish that the victim's family gets justice as well. I have been closely observing the various twists and turns that this case has undergone over the past one year. There has been a spate of allegations made on Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala as well. There have been various statements questioning the name and fame of Dharmasthala. Direct allegations have been made against me and my family members and it is regrettable that these allegations are continuing in various fora even now. I also urge the government to take suitable action to stop the slander campaign against Dharmasthala."

Belthangady MLA Vasanth Bangera, who was also pitching for CBI inquiry said, "I have always maintained that the family of Nirmala need to get justice and hence I had also sought for CBI inquiry and have written both to chief minister Siddaramaiah and home minister KJ George."

"I also appeal to all those organisations which have been protesting and have planned protests to withdraw till the CBI comes out with their report," he said. Regarding the new demand by the parents, Bangera said, "I trust and believe that CBI inquiry will get the family justice. I have sought only CBI inquiry."

It may be recalled that even D Veerendra Heggade, dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala demanded the probe be handed over to CBI recently. Heggade had said "Doubts still persist in the minds of the locals about the probe carried out by the CID and the report submitted by it to the government. Even I am of the opinion that there is need for further probe into the incident (given the doubts in minds of locals about the incident)."Incidentally, the inquiry report submitted by the CID has named Santhosh Rao, an earlier suspect of the Dakshina Kannada district police as the main and sole accused in the case. The CID report did not name four persons who Nirmala's parents had said were responsible for the crime in their letter to the home minister K J George.

On Wednesday, home minister KJ George at Davangere announced the probe will be handed over to CBI. "Heggade had written letter to CM to hand over the case to CBI as the organisations and parents of the girl were not convinced by the CID report. Hence, we have decided to hand over it to the CBI. When asked about the credibility of CID report, George asserted that there was no question of doubting the CID report. The CID has done its investigations properly. Let us not decide about the credibility of CID. Let us wait till the CBI gives its report and then we will know whether CID report was credible or not," said George.

He appealed all organizations, public and parents of Nirmala to withdraw their agitations and maintain peace, till the CBI report comes out.
