Kate Malonyay's ex-boyfriend plunges 26-storeys to his death as police close in to arrest him

The man suspected of murdering 32-year-old Kate Malonyay plunged to his death from the 26th floor of a luxury hotel on the Gold Coast as police were closing in to arrest him.

Police had reportedly traced Elliot Coulson, Malonyay's former beau, to a room at the Marriot on the Gold Coast. As police were forcing their way into Coulson's room to make an arrest, the suspected murderer leapt from his 26th floor balcony. It is unclear whether Coulson intended to fall or was attempting to evade police capture by climbing onto an adjacent balcony.

Malonyay was found dead in her Mosman apartment on Monday. Police said she was bruised and battered. Sources reported she had been strangled.

Friends were last in contact with Malonyay the previous Wednesday and had contacted her via text message over the weekend. It is suspected Coulson had her phone and was using it to text back her friends. While Malonyay's body was discovered Monday, she had been dead for a number of days, police stated.

Coulson reportedly continued to use Malonyay's phone as recently as the Tuesday following the discovery of her body, and police may have capitalised on the smartphone activity to trace Coulson.
