Pakistan's lead government prosecutor in the murder case of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was shot dead in Islamabad today.
State prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar was shot multiple times by two unknown assailants who intercepted his vehicle when he was en route to the next hearing at the anti-terror court. It was reported by some sources that the assailants rode a motorcycle and opened fire at him while he was driving. Zulfiqar was shot in the head, shoulder and chest, according to police. Other sources say the gunmen fired from a taxi. Zulfiqar's bodyguard returned fire and was wounded in the attack.
The assailants managed to escape the scene. Zulfiqar lost control of his car after being shot, crushing and killing a woman passer-by. He was taken to Islamabad's government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital but he died before reaching it.
Police have cordoned off the site of the incident and started a search operation in the area.
