Scores of people are feared dead or trapped under rubble after a building housing low income workers collapsed in Mumbai on Friday morning.

According to residents in a neighboring building, the collapse occurred just before 6 a.m. No parts remain standing.

Reuters reports that: "rescue workers pulled about 20 people from the ruins of the building, which was believed to have been about 35 years old and housed families of a corporation."

The building's ground floor was occupied by a decorator's business and the four upper floors housed at least 100 workers — mostly city garbage collectors and labourers — crammed into in one-room units, locals say.

As many as 90 people are believed to be trapped the beneath rubble, according to preliminary reports.

Hundreds of police and emergency workers crowded the site as officials struggled to coordinate the rescue response.

Such disasters are common in India. A collapse in April killed 74 people, the deadliest single incident in decades. Two more collapses in June killed 19 people. A month later a garment factory collapsed, killing another six, the New York Times reported.
