The Red Cross on Sunday confirmed the release of a former U.S. marine kidnapped in Colombia in June by FARC rebels.

(SOUNDBITE)(Spanish) JORDI RAICH, HEAD OF DELEGATION FOR COLOMBIAN RED CROSS, SAYING:

"We always do a very brief, very quick, medical examination in the rural area where he was handed over to us to make sure that he was fit and in a physical condition to travel, and indeed he was in a condition to undertake this journey."

Kevin Scott Sutay was snatched during a trek through jungle in a known guerrilla area after ignoring police warnings.

The rebels have held dozens of police officers, soldiers and politicians hostage over the years too.

It wasn't immediately clear why they agreed to Sutay's release but it may help peace talks with the government.

The talks have been going on for a year but progress so far has been slow.
