Hofstra University student killed by police officer's bullet

Police investigators revealed on Sunday that the Hofstra University junior taken hostage in her apartment and shot to death during a police standoff on Friday was killed by a bullet fired from an officer's gun.

Once Nassau county police arrived at the off-campus apartment, the armed robber, Dalton Smith, used 21-year-old Andrea Rebello as a human shield.

Attempting to flee to the rear of the apartment, the 30-year old convicted felon repeatedly told police "I'm going to kill her".

Smith next raised his weapon, pointing it directly at one of the police officers.

A police spokesman said this forced the male officer to act, and he fired eight rounds at Smith.

Smith was struck seven times, but Rebello was hit in the head by one of the eight rounds.

Reuters reports the officer who fired the shots is now on leave pending the completion of the investigation.
