A crew of 14 Thai fisherman leapt into the Andaman Sea after Myanmar naval forces allegedly attacked their boat in Myanmar territorial waters on Saturday.

With the captain of the Thai vessel, the Tor Taweesin 3, now missing, Myanmar authorities seized the boat two nautical miles from an island near Ranong Chang.

The area is disputed between the two countries.

The crewmen were reportedly recovered by a Thai navy ship stationed nearby. The vessel has now been impounded and Myanmar authorities say its captain was being held in custody in the Myanmar port of Kawthaung, Maynmar navy spokesman Niphan Chamachot told the Thai News Agency, according to the Bangkok Post.

At the time of this report, there was no confirmation that the captain is alive, nor were there immediate plans to return the trawler to Thailand.

The incident is ill-timed as Myanmar's commander-in-chief Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing declared that relations between the two Thailand and Myanmar are at their most cordial in the history of their relationship.

Min Aung Hlaing was in Bangkok only three days earlier with a delegation of military officers for talks with his Thai counterpart.
