1995 winner Claudia Schiffer
The first ever winner of the poll wasn't decided by the public, but by the bigwigs at the magazine's HQ. The first (and arguably the only) supermodel to triumph in its 18-year history failed to repeat her win, though has frequently made the top 100.
1996 winner Gillian Anderson
1996 was the first year of the award that the public were given the vote and they didn't fail to shock. The X Files star and redhead fought off stiff competition to romp home in first place, leaving a trail of controversy in the weeks that followed.
1997 winner Teri Hatcher
The Desperate Housewives star was in the big league back in 1997 when starring as Lois Lane in the then latest TV incarnation of Superman. She was 10 years older (33) than 2012 winner Tulisa when she won.
1998 winner Jenny McCarthy
The 1998 winner Jenny McCarthy was 26 years old when she won, and 14 years later she's still in the public eye as a TV presenter. The former Playmate of The Year is now a published author.
1999 winner Sarah Michelle Gellar
Shortly before the turn of the millennium, 1999 winner Sarah Michelle Gellar was busy slaying vampires as Buffy - suggesting that being the star of a huge TV show is certainly pretty helpful...
2000 and 2001 winner Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez ushered in the new millennium by winning the award in 2000, and then winning again in 2001 - the first woman to win the award twice. She remains the third-oldest woman to win (she was 32 when she won in 2001, just behind Teri Hatcher who was 33 when she won in 1997).
2002 winner Anna Kournikova
Anna Kournikova aced the field in 2002, becoming the first and so far the only athlete to win the award.
2003 winner Halle Berry
2003 winner Halle Barry broke a couple of records that year. At 37, she was the oldest woman ever to win; she was also the first black woman to win, and remains the only black woman to have done so to date.
2004 winner Britney Spears
Singer Britney Spears was 22 years old when she claimed top billing in the poll - back before a number of high-profile personal incidents. In her time we've seen her as both blonde and brunette - did hair colour make a difference? In 2012 52% of the Top 100 were brunettes - that's well ahead of blondes, at 33%.
2005 winner Kelly Brook
It took 10 years from the poll's launch before a British woman topped it, and back in 2005 it was the model and subsequent TV presenter Kelly Brook who managed that feat. She has appeared in more FHM 100 Sexiest lists than anybody else, popping up an incredible 13 times since 1995, showing that longevity in the public's imagination is achievable.
2006 Keira Knightley
Posh period drama actress Keira Knightley was the youngest ever winner of the poll, winning in 2006 at the tender age of just 21.
2007 winner Jessica Alba
Actress Jessica Alba is just one of the many actresses - both British and US - to take the poll's winning crown (although there's no actual crown awarded). This year, in line with previous years, 44% of the top 100 have been actresses - by far the most represented professional group.
2008 winner Megan Fox
Hollywood party girl and 2008 champion Megan Fox is among the youngest ever winners of the poll - she was just 22 when she won.
2009 and 2010 winner Cheryl Cole
Cheryl Cole made a little bit of history in 2010 by becoming the first British woman to win the accolade for two consecutive years, before model and Transformers star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley took last year's title. The only other woman to win two years - consecutive or otherwise - was Jennifer Lopez, back in 2000 and 2001.
2011 winner Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
Lingerie model and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley may have topped the poll in 2011 but she's languished in the 2012 poll, only reaching 18th spot. It's becoming increasingly clear just how hard it is to keep up appearances year after year in the public gaze. Still, she might not be too upset - she's set to launch her own lingerie in Marks & Spencer later this year.
What have we discovered?
We've had blonde winners, redhead winners, actresses, an athlete, British and US women, the young and slightly older - but the number-crunchers would say you're most likely to win if you're 26 years old, are brunette, an actress, and American. Oh, and female. All of which almost definitely rules most of us out. Still, there's always firing in a screamer from the edge of the penalty area during a Sunday league football game. Now THAT'S achievable... just about.
