Three people were injured when the roof of a recently opened shopping mall in Singapore's Jurong East collapsed late on Wednesday evening.

The collapse occurred at the JEM Mall at around 10pm and was reportedly caused by a burst pipe.

Witnesses in the mall at the time said that water suddenly started gushing from the ceiling shortly before the collapse.

Three women suffered minor injuries when a 50m section of the false ceiling collapsed nearby the BreadTalk and Robinsons stores.

They were taken to the National University Hospital for treatment.

Shoppers inside the mall described hearing a large 'boom' and the sound of rushing water.

Customers and shop owners were then evacuated from the mall as maintenance workers struggled to shut off the water to stop the first floor units from flooding.

A spokesman for the Singapore Civil Defence Force said it had received a call at 10.14pm reporting that "a part of the false ceiling" had collapsed. It dispatched two fire engines, an ambulance, and several other vehicles in response.

The collapse is the latest in a series of incidents at the mall, which only opened on 15 June after a delay of several days caused by issues with fire safety permits for some of the tenants.

Last month, a deep fat fryer at a supermarket caught fire injuring three people while a car also caught fire in the car park.
