Police often respond to what they believe are potentially life-threatening and dangerous situations. However, sometimes it’s a major false alarm.

Law enforcement authorities along with fire officials were recently sent to the Westfield Southgate Mall in Sarasota, Florida after calls came in regarding a suspicious powdery substance which was being spread inside stores in the building.

The strange material turned out to be the ashes of a grieving man’s deceased fiancée. But first responders weren’t aware of that initially, so the mall was put on lockdown for several hours, while an investigation was launched.

A worker in the mall had witnessed a man throwing the powder and leaving the scene. Employees were able to obtain his license tag.

While a hazardous materials team conducted tests on the power, police hunted for the suspect. Eventually they found him and listened to his bizarre tale.

A lieutenant elaborated stating “His fiancée passed away a number of months ago. She has a connection to Westfield and he was spreading her cremated remains around the mall. He did not realize the commotion he'd cause over it.”

The man’s identity remains unknown and he will reportedly not face any criminal charges.
