The generation of people that grew up during the first decade of the millennium are called millennials.

This age group is reportedly drinking more wine than previous generations, and their consumer habits are changing the wine industry in several significant ways.

According to distributor Naked Wines, millennials make up an estimated one third of their customer base.

Although the wine industry is typically made up of an older discerning crowd, a change in the age of wine drinkers comes along with a change in other traditional values associated with the industry.

Younger wine drinkers can gain knowledge by researching online and are spending less money on average for a bottle of wine.

Even the packaging of wine is changing from the typical 750 milliliter glass bottle with a cork.

Melissa Saunders, owner of a wine importing company called Communal Brands said: “We’ve barely scratched the surface on alternative packaging, we will see more boxed wine, aluminum bottles and other innovative ways to present wine outside the standard wine bottle.”

Another new development in marketing for wine companies is the use of social media to connect with the new generation of consumers.
