OPCW wins 2013 Nobel Peace Prize

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has been awarded the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.
The announcement was made Friday from Norway.
(SOUNDBITE)(English) CHAIRMAN OF THE NORWEGIAN NOBEL COMMITTEE THORBJORN JAGLAND SAYING:
"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2013 is to be awarded to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, OPCW, for its extensive work for eliminating chemical weapons."
The OPCW, which is supported by the U.N, are working to destroy Syria's massive chemical weapons stockpile.
Evidence gathered by inspectors earlier this year aided the U.N. 's findings that chemical weapons had been used in a Damascus suburb in which more than 1400 people were killed.
The $1.25 million prize will be presented in Oslo in December on the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, after whom the award is named.
