Seven immigrants drown attempting to enter Italy on tuna fishing cage

Seven immigrants drowned on Sunday in the Strait of Sicily while trying to enter Italy by gripping on to a tuna fishing cage being towed by a trawler. According to Italian press reports, the Tunisian trawler "Khaked Amir" was carrying a tuna cage 85 miles south of Malta when some immigrants jumped from an inflatable boat and swam towards it and tried to cling onto the cage.

According to witnesses, the trawler's crew cut the line linking the boat with the cage and pushed immigrants who tried to get on board back into the water. Dozens of survivors were later rescued by the Italian coast guard and taken to Lampedusa island. According to local reports, survivors have told of a dozen victims, but investigators are still trying to verify the authenticity of their stories.
