Three civilians were killed in a roadside bomb attack targeting second vice-president and Hazara ethnic minority leader Mohammed Mohaqiq.

Six of Mohaqiq's body guards were injured in the explosion that occurred early in the morning while the second vice-president was travelling to parliament near the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission.

The politician was traveling in a convoy in the capital when the device was detonated.

Thirty people were injured in the explosion, the latest in a spate of ramped up violence executed by insurgents in the lead up to the international military coalition hand over of responsibility for fighting the Taliban to the national army.
