A mayoral candidate was kidnapped and murdered in Durango, Mexico on July 1, six days before the local election.

The body of Jose Ricardo Reyes Zamudio was found in an area known as El Sauz by the Mexican army. It was reported that Zamudio received multiple gunshots. Local media said Zamudio was kidnapped by armed men when he was participating in a funeral. Five mayors have been killed in Durango in the last four years.
