In a statement to the nation, Egyptian authorities warn against any unrest that would disrupt Sunday's 40th anniversary of the 1973 war with Israel.

Despite this warning, both opponents and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood have called for mass protests.

During the broadcast, interim President Adly Mansour appeared to reassure Egyptians that free and transparent elections would be delivered soon.

Political tensions have gripped Egypt since the army ousted President Mohamed Mursi in July, installing an interim government.

Hundreds have died in the unrest.

Here video taken from a social media website appears to show clashes between supporters of Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood party and the military.
