Indian Border Security Force opened fire at protesters outside their camp in Gool area of Kashmir's Ramban district on July 18. At least six people were killed and more than thirty people were injured.

It was reported that the protest was caused by some BSF troopers entering a mosque with shoes the previous night. The troopers also allegedly beat up the cleric who was praying inside the mosque and tore several pages of the Muslim holy book Koran. Thousands of protesters then gathered outside a BSF camp on the next day and started throwing stones. Local media reported that BSF personnel fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters before shooting at the protesters.

There has been no immediate response from the BSF. Authorities have announced an inquiry.
