Fencing coach Franco Scaramuzza foils robbery in Tennessee

Fencing coach Franco Scaramuzza stopped a robbery in Tennessee last week when he chased down suspects Michael Butt and Zachary Johnson with a sword.

Scaramuzza was pulling into a shopping center in Nashville when he saw two men spray a couple with pepper spray, then steal a handbag, local TV channel WSMV reported.

Impelled to do something to help the couple and stop the bad guys, Scaramuzza, who had just come from a fencing lesson, grabbed his sword from the back seat and went after the suspects screaming.

According to an interview he gave WSMV, Scaramuzza ran at the men with the fencing weapon, called an epee, held high, while yelling the whole time.

The robbers, faced with a screaming man coming at them in rather fitted white overalls and tight, white knee-high socks, dropped the purloined purse and promptly got out of there. Someone on or near the scene must have called the police, as the cops arrested the men not long after.

The unfortunately named duo, Butt and Johnson, were charged with robbery and as of today's reports are still in jail, with $50,000 bonds on each men. WSMV reported that Johnson's girlfriend is convinced that her boyfriend had nothing to do with the incident and was picked up by mistake.

Scaramuzza, who is also an artist and art director, said he used moves on the robbers that he teaches in his classes.

He noted that in fencing, 'You have to make decisions in a very quick amount of time," adding, "...you can do it without the weapon. It happens in your mind, and that's how you try to make the right choices."
