A prison riot in Honduras on August 3 has left three people dead and 15 injured.

Saturday's riot occurred at Honduras' National Penitentiary, just outside the capital, Tegucigalpa. The prison houses more than 3000 inmates and, like most in the country, is effectively run by its prisoners.

Police said members of the 18 gang clashed with common criminals. Guards were unable to contain the fighting. The military was sent in to restore order. Three inmates died in the fighting and with guards and inmates among the 15 wounded.

Prisons in the country are understaffed, chaotic and overcrowded and authorities have little power to improve the situation.
