UK Police apologise after cops mistake Prince Andrew for Buckingham Palace intruder

The son of Queen Elizabeth, Prince Andrew, has accepted an apology from the UK police over an incident that saw two armed officers stop him in the gardens of Buckingham Palace

The two officers reportedly shouted at the 53-year-old prince to "put your hands up and get on the ground."

The prince was taking an afternoon stroll around the grounds of the palace at around 6pm after attending an event in London on Wednesday when the officers failed to recognise him.

A statement from the prince released on Sunday said: "The police have a difficult job to do balancing security for the royal family and deterring intruders, and sometimes they get it wrong."

"I am grateful for their apology and look forward to a safe walk in the garden in the future."

Scotland Yard had earlier confirmed that two officers had stopped a man in the gardens of the palace and asked him to identity himself.

"The man was satisfactorily identified. No weapons were drawn and no force was used," the statement said, contradicting original reports.

The incident occurred just two days after two men were detained folloing a breach in security at the palace.

Last Monday police arrested a man identified as 37-year old Victor Miller inside the palace on suspicion of burglary, trespass and criminal damage.

A second man was arrested outside the palace. Both men were released on bail.

The queen was not in residence at Buckingham Palace at the time as she is staying at her castle in Balmoral, Scotland.
