SUV jumps curb, runs over five schoolkids near Queens school

Five middle school students were seriously injured on Thursday morning after a Queens driver lost control of his SUV, jumped a curb and plowed into them as they made their way to school.

Francis-Aung Lu was dropping his daughter off at school about a block from Intermediate School 73 in Maspeth, when police say he accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

His Honda Pilot SUV quickly accelerated, jumped a curb and plowed directly into a group of students.

Thirteen-year-old Ashley Khan took the direct impact of the massive vehicle, which went on to run over best friends Marina Abadir, 14, and Ashley Khan, 13, trapping them underneath it.

"He went up over the curb and ran right into the kids coming out of the store," said Lynx Garcia who witnessed the accident unfold, according to a WABC report. "I saw one of the girls under the car, and I helped get her out. I held her until they came."

Fast-acting bystanders worked together to pull the two students from underneath the more than two ton SUV.

"Me and like 10 other guys helped lift the car up, and that was it," said David Foubister, one of the passersby who helped free the two children. "We got the girls out, and from there, paramedics and police and everybody was here after that."

The driver, who remained at the scene, cooperated with police and no charges were filed.

The five injured students were taken to Elmhurst Hospital and are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
