Deng Xiaoping

In the late 1970s, Deng Xioaping set a condition to the US for full diplomatic relations. The US was to end its close relations with Taiwan. The US acceded. From here, both China and US began full diplomatic relations. On the economic front, China opened its doors to Western investors. Deng set up economic zones on the Eastern part of China and those zones boomed almost immediately. Today, much of China has reformed and capitalism is very much part of the Chinese economy.
