The invasive species known as crazy ants have been spotted moving into the state of Georgia in the southeastern United States.

Also called tawny crazy ants, they are known for over running areas, wiping out populations of fire ants, and destroying electronics.

Although the crazy ants don’t sting people like fire ants do, they are responsible for a host of other problems.

According to Joe MacGown, research technician for the Mississippi Entomology Museum: “They get into light fixtures, electrical breakers, computers, handheld devices and things like that. And in Houston they have even gotten into large equipment in factories, and they have had serious problems in that area.”

Compared to other ant species, the crazy ants have huge populations called supercolonies.

The large numbers of crazy ants in a colony, and their propensity for destruction have caused problems for people whose houses have been infested.

The ants are an invasive species to the US that was first found in Texas in 2002.

Experts think that they were brought in accidentally from South America by humans transporting plants or equipment that was inadvertently carrying the ants.
