U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel laid a wreath at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington D.C. to honor the victims of the shooting rampage at the Navy Yard the day before.

Hagel was joined by other senior members of the U.S. Department of Defense at the brief wreath laying ceremony which took place next to the statue of "The Lone Sailor".

Investigators say 34-year old IT contractor Aaron Alexis shot to death 12 people before he was killed in a shootout with police at the Navy Yard, a naval compound where some 3,000 people work.
