Iraq blasts hit Shi'ite areas

At least five people lost their lives when a car packed with explosives was detonated in this Shi'ite district of eastern Baghdad.

Police said another 17 were wounded in the blast on Sunday.

At about the same time another bomb went off at a street cafe in the northern, Al Shuala district which is also mainly Shi'ite.

At least two people were killed and ten more wounded.

The bombings were part of a wave of bloodshed across Iraq on Sunday as explosions and shootings claimed at least 36 lives.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility although Sunni Islamist insurgents have been regaining momentum in recent months.

The United Nations says about 800 Iraqis were killed in August.

More than a third of the deadly attacks happened in Baghdad.

Eighteen months after the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq there are fears of a return to the sectarian slaughter of the past when the monthly death toll sometimes passed 3, 000.
