You probably don’t see the technique in a lot of outdoor survival literature, but one man successfully used his cellphone to evade further attack by a polar bear.

You probably don’t see the technique in a lot of outdoor survival literature, but one man successfully used his cellphone to evade further attack by a polar bear.

A special app, perhaps?

Nope, Garret Kolsun just turned it on and shoved the lit screen towards the bear’s face.

The polar bear backed up and knocked over a planter. While it was distracted, Kolsun made a run for it.

Before that, things weren’t looking too good for him.

Kolsun was in Churchill, Manitoba, polar bear capital of the world, on a job.

One night he was out late, walking through an industrial area towards home.

A strange sound made him look over his shoulder.

That’s when he saw the bear coming at him at full speed - he screamed and ran.

Eventually, the bear was able to pin Kolsun against the door of an unoccupied bakery.

Tired, bitten, swatted and completely alone, desperation kicked in and that’s when the idea to use the cellphone occurred to him.

It bought him just enough time to find shelter and transportation to the hospital, where he was able to have the puncture wounds and numerous scratches treated.
