U.S. President Barack Obama placed a wreath at the Pentagon in a somber ceremony on Wednesday (September 11) to mark the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The ceremony was attended by family members of victims who died when a hijacked jetliner crashed into the Pentagon.

"May God bless the memory of those that we lost. May he comfort you and your families and may God bless these United States of America," Obama told audience members during a speech in the memorial site dedicated to victims of the attack.

A large American flag was draped over the side of the Defense Department building where the plane made its impact.
