A family of treasure hunters uncovered 300 thousand dollars worth of loot off of the coast of Fort Pierce, Florida.

The stash of gold was dug up from 15 feet beneath the ocean floor and is primarily in the form of coins and chains.

One family member said that when her brother revealed the treasure, “His pocket was hanging with gold about down to the ground… It was an intense moment. We were all just screaming and crying."

This is by far the largest discovery for the Schmitt family and their company Booty Salvage. Prior to this their biggest haul was a silver plate valued between 30 and 40 thousand dollars.

Typically what they come across are discarded beer cans and fishing paraphernalia.

The site of the gold find is believed to be where several Spanish ships were sunk by a hurricane in 1715.

They report that a lot has been found in the area, but most of it is still out there. Of the 600 million dollars worth of cargo believed to have ended up on the ocean floor, about 175 million has surfaced.
