Egypt violence seen by cartoonists
Cartoonists in Egypt began chronicling political developments in their country, during the 2011 revolution, publishing in newspapers and online. Over the past few days their work has focused on clashes between security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi.
Amr Okasha contributes to the Liberal Party’s paper Al Wafd. In this drawing he presents the situation from the army’s point of view and depicts the Muslim Brotherhood as dangerous terrorists prepared to put the country to fire and sword if it means gaining power.
Writing on the site TheWorld.org, American researcher Jonathan Guyer says the Egyptian press tends to support the ruling military, as shown in this illustration featured in daily newspaper Al Akhbar. The picture compares General al-Sisi to Nasser, the founder of modern Egypt.
It would seem that those more critical of the army prefer to publish their works on the Internet to avoid being censored. Like Ganzeer for example, the artist behind this drawing which was widely shared by Egyptian web users on Wednesday when the military forcefully evicted pro-Morsi supporters from their protest camps.
And Mohamed Tawfik has also criticized the armed forces in these satirical cartoons posted to Facebook. In this drawing, he imagines a thank you card in which the army expressed gratitude to the people of Egypt for their support and giving popular legitimacy to a coup d’état.
