So, why would a city do such a thing?
Technically, it wasn’t actually Green Bank officials that made the law. In 1958 the FCC designated the area as a quiet zone.
Green Bank is home to the world’s largest steerable radio telescope, considered by many to be the strongest one examining space.
It picks up sounds from all over the universe and has reportedly allowed scientists a glimpse into the happenings following the Big Bang, some 14 billion years ago.
The thing is, the telescope has a low tolerance for interruptions, so anything that could disturb it has to remain powered down.
They’re serious too, keeping police on duty whose primary task is to drive around town looking for illegal signals.
Many of the town’s teenagers think it’s a drag and impinges upon their social lives, but a lot the other 149 residents don’t seem to mind it.
For people passing through who need to stay in touch while on the road, the town is equipped with pay phones.
