El portugués ha asegurado que la pasada temporada intentó fichar al galés Gareth Bale para el Real Madrid y se jactó de haber entrenado al Ronaldo "auténtico", en referencia al delantero brasileño ya retirado. En una entrevista a la cadena ESPN, Mourinho, que rescindió su contrato con el Real Madrid y volvió al Chelsea, se lamentó de que su anterior club no hubiera logrado que el Tottenham Hostpur le traspasase a Bale hace un año.
