Rio police clash with protesters

The stand-off continues.

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff has pledged reforms and increased public investment, but this has so far failed to quell the unrest in Rio de Janeiro.

State Governor Sergio Cabral remains a target of protests that began last month.

The numbers are small compared to June's demos, which attracted more than 1 million people onto the streets in Brazil's largest demonstrations in two decades.

Looters can be seen raiding shops and attacking CCTV cameras.

Protest organisers say they plan to continue their campaign of civil disobedience during Pope Francis' upcoming visit to Rio for World Youth Day, beginning July 23.

The city's security forces will be further tested as more than a million people are expected to attend the scheduled events.
