Riot police fire off tear gas on protesters in Istanbul
  • 11 years ago
Turkish police fire off tear gas and water cannon... dispersing a crowd in a central Istanbul square Saturday as it attempted to enter Gezi Park, the center of last month's anti-government protests.

At least one protester was injured in the scuffle.

Last month, police cracked down on a group protesting against the planned redevelopment of Gezi Park. Those plans sparked anger against the government of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan who backed the redevelopment. Critics say he's become increasingly authoritarian since coming to power.

But a court ruled for cancellation of those redevelopment plans.... a victory for protesters and a blow for Erdogan.

Four protesters were killed and some 7500 wounded in last month's crackdown.
