But according to Muslim Brotherhood activists, 40 people were injured when the army opened fire on the worshippers, who were said to be supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Mursi.

At least one man was badly wounded in the incident, which is said to have taken place on Friday.

Five Egyptian police officers were gunned down in separate incidents on Friday in El Arish, medical sources said, after Islamist gunmen killed a soldier in a separate attack in a nearby town overnight.

It is unclear whether the shootings are connected.

Egypt has struggled to control security in the Sinai peninsula since the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
