What Good is Government? Sen. Mike Lee vs. Supreme Court
Charles Koch Institute - Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship, Hillsdale College
As part of the Charles Koch Institute's commitment to dialogue and discovery, we're excited to host Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) to discuss his view on the ruling and its wider implications for societal well-being, individual liberty, and economic freedom.Nearly twelve months ago, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion upholding the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate on the grounds that the "Federal Government does have the power to impose a tax on those without health insurance." However, Chief Justice Roberts also opined that the "Federal Government does not have the power to order people to buy health insurance."Through reining in what some critics deem to be a broad interpretation of the Commerce Clause, Chief Justice Roberts, according to SCOTUSblog's Lyle Denniston, struck "a major blow to Congress's authority to pass social welfare laws."
