According to the scientists, the color of the shirt visually makes the shoulders broader and the waist slimmer, a silhouette associated with masculinity.

The scientific journey taken to reach this conclusion involved 30 women aged 18 to 25, and a bunch of pictures of men sporting both plain white shirts and variations with the letter T.

First, the ladies assessed the men’s attractiveness and health based on pics of them in non-printed tees.

The process continued, but the t-shirts in the pictures changed. Men were presented in shirts with the letter T upright, upside down, as well as thick and thin renditions.

When wearing t-shirts with upright letter Ts bearing thick crossbars that accentuated the shoulders, the men got higher ratings. (2,6,all) Men wearing unadorned shirts were voted hotter than those in the waist-accentuating upside down T versions.

The specific waist-to-chest ratio seen as the most desirable is in the .7 to .8 range, making the shoulders 20 percent wider than the waist.
