Al Qarra - After a short hearing, a judge announced the acquittal of two senior officials of the former Libyan regime on Monday, to cheers of families of the accused.
Abdelati al-Obeidi, a former foreign minister and Mohamed al-Zwai Belgassem, the former speaker of parliament, were accused of financial crimes linked to the Lockerbie bombing.
In 1988, 270 people died in the attack against the PanAm Flight 103 above the Scottish town. The regime of Muammar Gaddafi formally accepted responsibility in 2003. Tripoli agreed to compensate the families of victims to the tune of $ 2.7 billion.
